Games for beginners

This page lists all “games for beginners,” with the ones currently accepting new players shown first. These games are run by “Mentors” — volunteers who are generously offering their time and expertise to help new users learn how Storium works.

If you're new around here, joining one of these games is a great way to learn the ropes. There’s no pressure or expectations, nor is there any long-term commitment. Just join up and play for as long as you need to!

Note: if you’re a free Storium user, these games do not count against your 3-game limit. So dive in!

Lent

It is Lent.

This game explores the world in the run up to the crucifixion of Christ, and the events and characters of that time still remembered today.
They had no idea that they were making history, and their lives would be the subject of discussion, disagreement and wonder for centuries to come.

I would want any player to tell me if I need to adjust to increase their access. I think in particular of those with sight impairment and the use of art, but I include anything I have not thought of.

Legions of superheroes and supervillians fly towards each other, an epic battle in the making.

The Z-Listers: A Storium Beginners game with 3 scenes.

A Massive cosmic entity threatens the east coast, bringing a threat completely unlike anything the world has ever seen. Furthermore, the world’s most devious villains and most fiendish masterminds have joined this unfathomable being of evil.

But this story is not about that conflict and you are not those legendary heroes. who have joined the fight against it.

The west Coast city of Emerald City Oregon used to be a hotbed of super-powered activity, but now, only the most pathetic and inept heroes and villains remain.

The players take on the incompetent or pathetically weak Z-list heroes, and must defend Emerald city from equally inept and powerless villains.

What I did in the holidays.

This game is for those who like to tell short stories.

It consists of little stories within a story. Modern day.

Use this game to learn the ropes and meet other players - you can put in one mini-story and go if you wish!

The usual assignments are filed as with every other year.
However, not quite as usual.
The first submitted is a rather impressive yarn.
So one by one, the students seek to out-do one another, as each successive submission becomes more embellished than the last.
By the time it comes to show-and-tell, imagination has totally run riot…

Under stormy, ominous skies, a brilliant sunset frames a jagged cliff topped by a lighthouse. Nearer by, a rocky beach shelters an abandoned rowboat. Further out to see, a tall masted ship sets out for the horizon.

Semester Fun at Easterbrook College

The Village by the Sea is too beautiful not to fall in love with, too magnetic to be anything but a tourist trap. Over the decades, the struggling colony became a town of wealth and industry.

Now, Easterbrook College pulls in more out of town students to its vaunted halls than locals. The descendants of the Founding families seek to maintain the picturesque reputation, the “small town charm,” and the quiet obedience to the weight of custom. But underneath, the Village struggles with itself and the secrets contained within it. Its growth into a bustling community of size conceals a horrible truth: it was built on the darkest magic imaginable.

For those new to Storium, this is a beginner game (players/writers with no or limited previous game activity.). We will focus on learning how to use Storium. Each Scene will have Challenges that are designed to help you learn different aspects of the awesome Storium Universe and we will complete about 3 scenes for this Storium game (a shortened story for a beginning game).

A propsector's spacecraft, framed by the bright sun, lands on a rocky outcropping overlooking an endless desert.

Welcome to Quantum Flux Gulch

Mulysa (means dirty dump in the native tongue) was a dead-end world on the edge of human space, given the formal name of Everlorn even as the few souls to stumble across its wasteland and make it home stuck to the native name. It was destined to skip through space as a forgotten lump of rock — until the day a prospector stumbled out of the desert with a million credits’ worth of hyperdrive crystals in his hands. Now spaceships thunder through the skies above the planet’s boomtowns, and fortune hunters fill the dusty streets. Strap on a blaster or pick up a digger and stake your claim in this space western. You may find yourself exploring alien ruins and risking the wrath of the desert tribes, or riding a howling hoverbike and living the life of an outlaw. You might be a farmer trying to help feed the masses or perhaps you just want to open a nice little shop in town.

It’s the wild west meets future space age (ok yeah it’s a lot like Firefly :)

For those new to Storium, this is a beginner game (players/writers with no or limited previous game activity.). We will be focusing on learning how to use Storium. Each Scene will have Challenges that are designed to help you learn different aspects of the awesome Storium Universe. Stay and play to learn and then when ready you can “leave town” and retire or hand-off your character, ready to ride off into the Storium Sunset to face new adventures ;)

Please Note - the structure of this game is different than many Storium games. Each week I will post a new scene whether the challenges are complete or not. This Storium will run for the course of four weeks. The ideal is to post once or twice a week and make sure you can play for the full four weeks. If a player misses a week, that is ok, the Narrator will just weave the story to include any missing player posts.

InSpectres: Ghost Hunting for Beginners

You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve heard the radio ads. You’ve read the testimonials. You’ve even watched the documentary TV show. You know the InSpectres.

In a world rife with ghosts, ghouls, and goblins, the Inspectres are the (privatized) front line of defense. When you’ve got werewolves on your property, vampires in your attic, or just a ghost that won’t stop stacking your chairs when you plan on using them, these are the people you call.

And it just so happens that a new franchise is opening in your area. That 9-5 grind isn’t quite the highlight of your life. The days are long and far from enjoyable. Maybe this is the perfect place to start fresh.

Welcome to InSpectres, a game inspired by the tabletop RPG by Momento Mori Games. In this heavily structured beginner game, you play as employees of the newly opened InSpectres franchise as they set up shop and go out on their first mission.

In this game, beginners will learn:
-How to make a character
-How the various types of cards work, including neutral cards
-How challenges work, including special rules a narrator might add to challenges
-How to strategize and work challenges using the game and card rules of Storium
-How to ignore the game and let this be a collaborative writing experience.

DAO Academy: Pari Passu Squad

DAO Academy: Pari Passu Squad

For those new to Storium, this is a beginner game (players/writers with no or limited previous game activity.). We will focus on learning how to use Storium. Each Scene will have Challenges that are designed to help you learn different aspects of the awesome Storium Universe and we will complete about 2 scenes for this Storium game (a shortened story for a beginning game).

The story revolves around a cohort of cadets at a training academy.

It is your first day at DAO Academy located in the Catskill Mountains in New York State, USA. You are a rookie recruit for the DAO. The Department of Abnormal Occurrences (DAO) is a worldwide organization dedicated to dealing with strange situations. DAO Agents operate in a world filled with metas (non-baselines), mystical, magical, aliens, humans (baselines) and more all trying to find a place in this crazy world. You are on your way to becoming a DAO Agent. You just have to survive your basic training at the Academy.

The Academy is set in the extended DAO universe. Examples of other games in the same universe include DAO Season 1, DAO Season 2, and DAO: Vault 13. There is also a DAO Wiki

Don’t be daunted by the extensive history. Each game is a self contained story. No previous knowledge is required.

The world DAO Academy is set in is similar to ours. Though there is a fantasy twist. In this world, the supernatural and the fantastic exist. Aliens have visited. Fey toy with mortals. Scientist fiddle with the very fabric of space and time.

The average denizen of Earth had no idea there were magical and meta mixed in. It was the DAO’s mission to help contain the meta/magical world. This was easy when Metas and magic was “hidden”, existing on the fringes and edges of society. But times change and more are aware now of Metas and this makes the DAO’s job a lot more complicated. The world is in a time of transition.

This is set in the storyworld of Department of Abnormal Occurrences created by @Twisted_Gnome - thanks TG for letting us play in the DAO sandbox

Monster of the Week: A Beginner's Guide to Monster Hunting

Coming soon to a TV near you: Monster of the Week! Follow a group of heroes as they travel the country, investigating horrible mysteries and fighting the creatures that exist under the bed and in the closet. They may be an unlikely group, but can their friendship survive the mission? Or will the mission be thrown by their incompatability? Find out on Monster of the Week!

In this game you will play as a group of monster investigators to the tune of Supernatural, X-Files, and Buffy. Some of the writing styles will even reference cuts and other such TV references.

In the process of playing this game you will get an overview of how Storium works. In the full course you will learn:

-How to make a character
-How the various types of cards work, including neutral cards
-How challenges work, including special rules a narrator might add to challenges
-How to strategize and work challenges using the game and card rules of Storium
-How to ignore the game and let this be a collaborative writing experience.

Beginners be warned: Many Beginner games are more “drop in, drop out” allowing for you to get your feet wet and see if Storium is for you. While those games are good and have their place, I generally design mine to have a more direct story and a thought process to teach the players.

If you do not want to stick around for a full game, this may not be the game for you.

Its growth into a bustling community of size conceals a horrible truth: it was built on the darkest magic imaginable.

It is the Bubbles Festival - a week long festival steeped in tradition as the first Festival was held 200 years ago. Many are drawn to this festival and this year’s event is extra special as it is the bicentennial and the town council wants it to be a celebration no one will ever forget, even if it becomes something no one will want to remember.

Welcome to Ancient Bubbles. This is a basic, beginners’ game (for Storium Players just starting and with very few games under their belts) where people can come learn the ropes of working with the card mechanics, hosts, narrators, and other players . This will be a short story (2 - 3 scenes) designed to give you a “taste” of what Storium has to offer.

Each player will create a character. Your Nature card sets your basic place/character type. Your Strengths and Weaknesses should be personality traits. And the Subplot should be your set character goal for completing your character’s personal arc within the story.

Please note - this is an ALL Ages Storium, which means you will want to watch language and adult themes when posting (please keep your posts PG to PG-13).
