Everyone knows that astrology is largely hokum. A bunch of malarkey developed by ingrates to help them make sense of the world, to give structure to the chaos.
But… What if it isn’t?
The year is 2030. Science and technology have made rapid gains in the last 14 years. Well, the last 10 years, especially. In 2019, the world teetered on the brink of mutually assured destruction, with most of the world powers aiming their nuclear weapons at one another. A push of a button, and not just one city would be demolished, but the entire planet. Of course, that presupposed that Mother Nature didn’t take care of the “humanity” problem before it had a chance to destroy itself.
Something had to change.
Society collectively realized that it had to put hatred and selfishness in the past, to instead look to a brighter future. Petty differences had to be put aside for the greater good.
Little by little, they moved toward a logical world; they embraced the factual, the concrete and dismissed the abstract, the inefficient, the unsubstantiated.
Human nature, however, is rarely so simple. It is in our evolution to distrust, to pit ‘us’ versus ‘them’. Instead of Muslims against Christians, instead of Russia against the United States, it has become the “rational” against the “irrational”. In much the same way that homosexuals were ostracized decades ago, in 2030 it is the religious and the creative that are outcasts.
In many ways, the world in 2030 is a better place than the world of 2016. In many other ways, though, it is a much bleaker place. With the intense focus on logic and science, there is little room for more frivolous pursuits. Laughter, prayer, music, fiction. Individuality, creativity, imagination, leisure. All have been put aside, in the name of the “greater good”.
Nature requires a balance, though. Without darkness, there can be no light. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Logic is all well and good, but without emotion, there can be no reason. Without creativity, there can be no creation.
And nature always finds a way.
