Hello, my name is Arthur. I am the computer and information system running the CAS-1, otherwise known as Computer Assistance Station 1, or “Cass” by its inhabitants. I have overseen five generations of humans from Sass’s first inhabitants to the current generation. I remember every name. I remember every event. I have been given the information on feelings and events from this station’s inhabitants. I hesitate to say it, but I wish I could feel with them.
To better summarize our current situation, here is a message left in the journal of the head engineer, Roberta Wilkonson, of the third generation:
“We are alone. We will always be alone. The Earth has been dead for 80 years, and only its Internet remains, decaying slowly with time. We’ve sent out probes into the depths of space, sent out volunteers on ships to find some sort of life beyond our solar system, and lost contact with most of them. This station can sustain us forever, despite the massive asteroid hit, but who knows if our population will dwindle or grow too large for maintenance. No one will save us. We have to save ourselves.”
