The Hotel Automaton has been designed to be the marvel of the Steam Age. Elevators driven by powerful basement boilers will whisk guests from floor to floor. Intricate clockworks have been designed to automate the mundane tasks of keeping the hotel running. In the lobby, a state-of-the-art mechanical man will efficiently handle checking guests into and out of the hotel.
In the morning, the hotel will open to the general public. Tonight, there is a celebration for investors and invited guests. All the wonders of the hotel will be on display, and dignitaries from the European partners will be arriving shortly at the rooftop zeppelin dock.
A few weeks ago an anonymous letter was delivered to Conrad Tuttle, the owner of the hotel. The letter warned that the hotel will never have a successful opening. Tuttle has tried to keep this message quiet and, because he has so much invested in the hotel, is counting on the threat being a hoax. Despite his best efforts, word of the message has trickled out to a few people.
The setting is an east coast city of the United States in the late 19th century, but this is not our world. I have incorporated some steampunk elements to allow us to avoid getting hung up on historical accuracy and to inject some elements of the fantastic. How far we go with the fantastic is up to the group.
I have included some cards to aid in developing characters but you should feel free to create your own as well. All player characters should have some knowledge of the threat to the hotel and some motivation for investigating that threat. There is no predetermined plot or outcome for this game. We will all create the story together, and you will have plenty of opportunities to contribute.
