San Francisco is free. You can’t be in the city for more than five minutes without somebody reminding you of this. Forget the megacorps. This is a society where people can live, hack, and fuck, and not be a corporate drone.
Everybody is, or wants to be a rockstar. Everybody’s looking for their shot at fame, whether it’s bands with their algorithmically programmed earworms, or code jockeys looking for the latest personalization algorithm. The hot piece of code, the hot vid could make you famous, get you an invite to some of the most exclusive tech communities. And runners? The ultimate status boost.
And you know, if sometimes there are disagreements, if most people have to work at the tech corps right outside the city to make ends meet, if sometimes there are forcible ‘recruitments’ of talent from the city, well, nobody really talks about that.
It’s a city that free, as long as you can pay the high cost of living there.
