Fusion power. It seemed fitting that before mankind could reach out to the stars they first had to develop with the capability to create their own.
After the fusion generator was perfected the developments cascaded forth. Laser and energy weapon technologies were finally feasible to power. FTL technologies could reach their city-draining requirements easily and with the human population exploding quickly out of control exploration and later colony ships were launched across the sea of stars.
This story takes place some five hundred years after mankind’s first colony. The galaxy was a lot more inhabited than originally anticipated and empires rose and fell. Alliances were forged and broken. cultures blossomed and withered.
It’s a galaxy constantly in motion. Pirates, rocket rangers, smugglers, militants, explorers scientists and many more roles and foes await you.
OOC talk
This is retro science fiction with a modern take, not unlike the TSR RPG Buck Rogers XXVC. All the fun stuff above exists but with an explanation. Ray guns, jetpacks and all but not the silliness of jetpacking to Mars or tape driven computers.
The players will all be playing as freelancers hired to be part of the crew of the exploration vessel ‘Rose Petal,’ a 100+ crew endeavor. These roles can be anything from security to science to engineering to media issues to chicken soup vending machine repairman. Past experiences can also vary wildly. Was your character once a proud member of a interstellar policing unit or perhaps were they former criminals? Whatever the case, the Storium system means that as long as you keep your character’s pros and cons interesting there’s not too much in the way of limits.
You can be human, alien, robot or a combination. If you go alien you can keep it at rubber-forehead levels or you can go full on mental and make something more bizarre. As long as it’s not OP or daft I’ll likely approve. Any race that’s psychic by the way is limited to telepathy. No telekinesis or beyond.
And yes, you will likely not be on the Rose Petal for long. Not when there’s ADVENTURE afoot!
For some basic character guidelines; you don’t have to be linked to any specific world or faction nor do you have to be a combative character. With that said some protective suits, shields and small arms are pretty much required. There’s still plenty of options even within those parameters. Do you only have a sealed protective suit under your uniform and rely on shields and your jetpack (unhindered by heavy weights) or are you a bit of a tank (think the armour from the Brotherhood of Steel in the Fallout series) whom can take punishment as well as you give it?
Jetpacks are a must though, especially since rocketships do not have artificial gravity so personal directional thrusters are a given. That’s right, liquid food in sealed bags, magnetic boots and beds you need to be strapped into for everyone!
Weapons generally are kinetic (gauss weapons), energy (lasers, electrolasers, PEPs, fusion based heat rays, etc) or self propelled (rocket pistols, etc) in nature. Melee weapons tend to be of the laser cutlass variety, with a physical blade projecting the energy along its edge. Best way to get through personal shields bar none, though you do need to get close of course.
If you have any questions about character creation, give me a poke and I’ll help you through.
The Rose Petal
An exploration vessel chartered by the Henriksen Foundation, the Rose Petal is a typical exploration rocketship. It uses space folding to get to unexplored space and then uses more conventional FTL to travel within a star system. It has a crew of scientists (geologists, xenobiologists, physicists, etc), rocketship crew (navigation, engineering, etc), security, diplomatic corps (with universal translators in case sentient species are discovered) and domestic staff such as catering and entertainment.
It’s a very cushy posting whatever position you’re in. Even reformed criminals face little more than stricter regulations on their communications and security access.
