The Pitch: Shortly before the beginning of the new school year, two friends witness a supernatural event that changes their lives and how they view the world forever. The story will begin fairly mundane and then take a turn into the supernatural.
Inspirations: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman; Shadowland by Peter Straub; Summer of Night by Dan Simmons; The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub; They Live directed by John Carpenter.
Setting: Horror/Urban-Fantasy. By this I mean the setting is modern and there will be significant magical elements with horrific overtones but one should think more along the lines of de Lint, Gaiman, and Lovecraft than World of Darkness.
Starting location: Panama City Beach, Florida in early August 2014.
Character Creation: Two best friends and/or siblings. Both ~15 and a week away from starting 9th grade. Unaware of the existence of authentic magic.
Cards: Open to card creation. You can simply use the ones that I created as a jumping off point. I tried something different and created mirror Strength/Weakness cards (same title but is a strength or weakness depending on card played) but you needn’t try to duplicate this.
Card Use: Not necessary for character moves but the cards in this setting are intended to represent how a character addresses a situation when under stress. Please only play one card at a time.
Posts: I like and encourage large posts. I have set the speed to Daily meaning that I will endeavor to post at least once a day (this may not hold for weekends/holidays) but I will often post more often if the players do.
Voice: Going to try something different here and ask that you write in the first person – from the perspective of your character. Part of the reason for this is I want to see what this looks like and I also believe it will help eliminate some Character Sovereignty issues (see below). I am open to changing this if we decide it is unwieldy or unpleasant to read.
Character Sovereignty: This is intended to lean more towards the collaborative story side of the spectrum than the game side. As such the Narrator and other player will likely on occasion pose your PC or insert some background into their lives. I ask that when this is done the person who does not have primary custody of the character be respectful and be open to revision requests. Players are able to pose NPCs (please see Voice above) unless the Narrator specifically indicates otherwise.
Narrator: I encourage people interested in this game to at least peruse some of the games that I narrate so you have a sense of what I am likely to write. This particular game will be more character focused than my other games but it will at least give you insight into my style. Also my favorite character that I write for as a player is Parker in Lost and Found.
