Fourth of July, 2018.
Deep into the night, the fireworks burst and flared, illuminating a country fractured by ideological rifts and dogmatic schisms. Pleas for unity and cries of unrest mingled in the air, and the digital landscape was scarred from scorching reviews and caustic comments. No corner of America was spared…
…and in a small part of the country, in a little state called Florida, there was a park. And in that park, a building: The Hall of Presidents, wherein 44 Audio-Animatronic representations of every past and present U.S. President are collectively held on large stage, which faces a now-empty auditorium.
And now…not so empty.
Scattered throughout the 700-seat theater are now dozens of figures, each hazy and indistinct, but somehow strikingly familiar to any who might have see them, though no one did. Lady Liberty, her torch now as long as a polearm and its flame diminished; Uncle Sam, his feet kicked up and atop the seat-back in front of him, his waistcoat unbuttoned. Lady Justice, standing in the aisle with her large scales across her shoulders like a yoke. And others…
A robed woman in the front row, seated beside a stout, red-cheeked man wearing a Union Jack vest on her left, and a trident and spear laid over the seats to her right, glared and the man-shaped machines on the stage.
As one, they blinked, and 88 plastic eyes swiveled down to meet hers.
“Well, gentlemen,” said Britannia, “what are your thoughts?”
In honor of one of the more divisive years in recent memory, I thought a game like this might be, if not necessary, then at least cathartic.
Play as one of the figures on the stage, or one of the Nationals (the anthropomorphic representations of a country’s identity, its people, or some fundamental value they cherish). This is less a trial than a court of inquiry, or perhaps a rather stressful shareholder’s meeting.
