By 2050 it had become unmistakable. Human life on Earth had it’s days counted. By 2270, the projections indicated, no more than a couple thousand humans would still be alive.
But by 2050 Project Gaia had been working in the shadows for over 30 years already. They knew someday humanity would have to leave it’s cradle, and that this would be the bravest voyage for our species, but they didn’t expect for it to be so soon.
As the the scenario changed, so did the Project, the efforts of conservation of Earth shifted to extending how long it could sustain human life, the research went from theoretical physics and the possibilities for faster than light travel to a matter of engineering for an ambitious project with tech from the near future, the quiet and recluse group of scientists was joined by the greatest minds of marketing, and together they hijacked the zeitgeist of the era. As the 21st century came to a closing humanity as a whole started a new age looking up, towards it’s future among the stars.
Even able to delay the upcoming doomsday, it was still unavoidable, and the construction of the first ship towards a new home began on the orbit of the planet on 2147. Dubbed Gaia-1, it would house humanity’s first colonists, it would be able to achieve the awe worthy speed of 0.7% light, over 7 million km/h, and would guide it’s 7 thousand inhabitants towards Gliese-667Cc, the first hope of a new home, over the next 350 years.
On the July the 31st of 2255, five months before launch, the pioneers who were ready to embark Gaia-1 had their final meeting with project leaders on Earth, as of tomorrow they’d leave Earth forever, making preparations for the voyage. One of which would be holding an election, setting themselves as an independent nation, the first ever away from our homeworld.
