They say a sucker’s born every minute. But out here, here in the dark, they collect like flies. They like to call themselves explorers, settlers, or scientists: folks driven by their ‘indomitable will’ to ‘aid the galactic cause’, or some such nonsense. They’re just folk like the rest of them: from the fancy-pants Xzantine Emperor down to the back-space colony idiot that has yet to learn to wipe h’self correctly. All just folk that like giving themselves fancy names, like Astrological Coalition, letting everyone else know who belongs and who don’t.
But then there’s folk like those aboard the stolen vessel, Lucifuge, who got different names. Brigands, cons, thieves, bullies, liars, charlatans, hacks, pirates… heard’m all. Folk say they’re uncouth, wild, and uncivilized: a blight on the peace and prosperity of the Astrological Coalition. Sure, they might not play by the rules, but they’re not as bad as all that.
Certainly not as bad those new folk on the scene, calling them Dark Ones. Some say they’re not folk at all. Others say they’re not even new, that they’ve been here all along. Still most folk don’t believe they exist, chalking up all the bad that happens out there to the likes of the Lucifuge crew and their ilk. But then, like they say: a sucker’s born every minute.
