The year is 2072. It has been sixty years since humans learned they were not alone in the universe, with the discovery of an alien observation outpost on Mars. Since that time, in a series of fits and starts, humanity has spread throughout its own solar system and leapt to many other stars, meeting new alien races, exploring worlds, and mastering new sciences.
Some would say that what motivates Earth’s drive to and through the heavens is fear - fear that when the particular alien race which once monitored us appears once more, that this time they may fight us; fear that Earth may finally be exhausted and that humanity will perish without a second home.
Other say that what drives us is greed - massive returns from the asteroid belt have seen Earth into a kind of prosperity despite global climate disasters, and nearly every new garden world discovered is auctioned off to the United States, so the proceeds can be divided among the rest of the planet and America has yet another place to settle its poor, destitute, and restless.
But some say that what drives us is in fact determination - that when the day comes that our would-be conquerors appear again, that we will be ready, and that humanity shall not vanish into the night or become yet another slave race.
And others would say that, in truth, what drives us is Curiosity - what lies beyond the starry void? Why were we spared when others fell? What do we not even know that we don’t know?
