Cobalt Lake was a quiet, picturesque town that sat roughly an hour southeast of Seattle. Homes remained tucked into pockets of endless forests. The trees were broken only by a series of two-lane roads and open plots of land. The shopping center in the heart of town was sizable, but nothing to write home about; they had the necessities, which was all that mattered. People were happy here, content. Many folks on the outside looked at the town and considered it to be a wonderful place to settle down, to start a family. The world was muted here. Safe, or so many of those who looked from a distance believed.
In reality, Cobalt Lake’s quiet streets were only so because they were muffled by the weight of many things left unsaid. Stories untold. Rumors passed among townsfolk like handwritten notes in class. Secrets lurked around each and every bend in the road. People always pretended not to see them, not to hear them, of course, much like they pretended not to see the glowing eyes that peered at them through the foliage. Danger lurked there, in the dense brush, in the space between one house and the next.
One weekend, a group high school students gathered for a Saturday detention at Sawyer Academy–a private school at the edge of Cobalt Lake. Together, they experienced a piece of the darkness that the town has to offer, and decided for themselves to see what’s really going on behind the curtain. Is it monsters, or something much, much worse?
