Weakness.
It has characterized humanity for most of its history. Weakness of health, spirit and political structure. It’s a small wonder we survived this long. Our only advantage ever has been the elasticity of our minds and our ability to adapt.
Now, that is about to change.
The year is 2315. I am Dr. Turn Sawadi, founder of The Orberus Confederation of Science. We have discovered the means of travel through space. Anti-matter fuel ensures that our ships will never run out of momentum. Sophisticated AI allow us to plot routes and maintain what functions we lack. The newly found Ion Portals even allow us to go further, to go between space and find ourselves in new solar systems.
But while our systems are up to par, there is still one thing we lack.
Time.
In the span of a human life, we can barely even make it out of our own system. The average life expectancy has increased to 120. Incremental improvements in biomedicine and molecular science can only buy us so many years.
The weakest link isn’t our technology. It is us.
We weren’t designed with the rest of the universe in mind. As we are now, we are not worthy to step into the boundaries of cosmos. If we are to explore new worlds, new places of being, it is we that must change. Not just our gadgets or environment.
We must become something more. We must embrace Biotech and rise to a new stage of humanity. Our organisms, our minds - yes, even our souls must improve.
Orberus is dedicated to this goal. Are you?
In Biotech, humanity is gaining increased control over their solar system. While the Sol system is being populated, three factions have risen among them: Terra, Orberus and Prometheus.
While these factions are vying for control in the Sol System, tensions are coming to a head. Everyone knows that if a full-scale war was to erupt, it would likely annihilate most of humanity.
But when a new life form was discovered on Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, everything changed.
Deep within the ice, fractured initially by Prometheans for water-supply, a symbiotic lifeform emerged. The first alien life to be encountered by mankind. It was quickly discovered that this bacterial life-form attached itself to other organisms and seemed to thrive in the DNA of humans.
To this day, very little is known about the Symbiote. But it does seem to enhance certain functions of the human organism, doing so at apparently random intervals.
It was a Symbiotic astronaut who discovered the first Ion Portal as well, being guided by strange visions to a hovering hoop made from a strange alloy.
Each faction is defined by its inclination towards the Symbiote and the fate of mankind.
Terra seeks to control and limit access to the Symbiote. Occupying Earth and representing the united countries and governments of the Cradle Planet, as some call it, Terra seeks to curb the influence and power of the other factions. Having the military advantage in both strength and numbers. They have less interest in new, strange powers developing sporadically among those not under the Terra banner.
Orberus is a scientist-led faction, spearheaded by Dr. Turn Sawadi. Originally a part of Terra as a mega-corporation and pharmaceutical centre of biomedicine, Orberus decided to splinter off from Earth when their experiments with the Symbiote became restricted by government rule. They, above all, seek to improve upon and expand the capabilities of Symbiotics, as well as learning how to further harness the powers of Symbiote - by any means necessary.
Prometheus split off from Terra earlier than Orberus, but their resolve has only been emboldened by the arrival of the Symbiote. They saw an opportunity in their disconnected lives from their mother planet and decided to found a new order of humanity, one that wasn’t bound up in corrupt policy and tyrranical law. Their intent is to build a space-born utopia of anarchistic rule, with no central government. In their own words, it is how humanity was meant to live: In separate tribes of social-not politcal-order. But that doesn’t stop individual tribes from banding together in a time of need…
If you like The Expanse, Mass Effect or Alien, this is the game for you. I may not be able to match them in scientific accuracy and detail, but the vibe of this game is very much going to reflect these franchises.
