The Hamlet of Ravenscar was once a thriving little village surrounding a striking manor atop the Cliffside. The owner, a reclusive man by the name of Gerald Tywinker, had step up the hamlet to facilitate his estate and provide him with income and supplies whilst he enjoyed the wealth and opulence of his ancestors. His grandfather had built the imperial and grandiose mansion atop the perilous Cliffside after many years of creating the finest swords and shield for the countries armies. His lucrative contracts had been hard-work and intensive and now he had his magnificent manor to retire in and the land surrounding it was begging to be utilised.
Several decades later the manor now lies in disrepute and ill-fashioned disrepair. Gerald, filled with the hubris of youth and boredom had exhausted the plentiful supplies of fine whiskey and young women and, unfortunately, developed a darker taste. He scoured the tomes in the library for the history of Ravenscar and read the tales of misfortune that had stalked the land prior to his grandfather’s settlement on the Cliffside. A tale of curses and unimaginable treasure – if only someone could find it. Gerald decided that this would be his life’s ambition and goal. He began to hire more and more townsfolk to excavate into the Cliffside in search of the cursed treasures that lay beneath his ancestral home. Gerald became a recluse, scouring over the many books in his vast library and only seeking disturbance when the men either required more gold for supplies or more men for their task. He ate less, his skin paled and he sought for answers like a hunter eagerly awaiting the first snapping twig to indicate a deer was nearby.
Many months later, and nearly all his ancestral wealth depleted, Gerald uncovered an ancient tomb deep within the Cliffside. The men did not want to sully the ancient, hallowed ground. The cave walls were carved with warnings in various languages, many understandable, many forgotten into the mists of time. Gerald, however, possessed by the demon-like drive to see what was beneath the land he owned – had no such qualms overlooking the dire warnings and desecrating the antediluvian tomb.
Gerald soon saw the error of his ways. As the men from the town scattered down the innumerable passageways that his wealth had bored deep into the Cliffside, the very core of the earth itself seemed to let out an incomprehensive wail. The tomb shook violently and he heard the screams of his workers as numerous passageways caved in under the encumbrance. Gerald saw all manner of unholy abominations rise from the deep cracks through the tombs floor. Skeletal monstrosities, incoherent malformations of animals and flesh, the rise of mythic creatures long thought figments of a terrified child. Gerald escaped the tunnels with mere moments to spare as the prolific and stoic mansion collapsed into the hollowed hillside. It was moments before the abominations began to spew forth from the tunnels and out of his ancestral home. He had tainted the land beyond reproach, the villagers wanted their revenge. He was seized by the villagers even as the survivors struggled to hold back the tide of horrors. The pyre was lit and soon after – Gerald was no more.
You have all received, aptly, a Raven from the few remaining settlers in Ravenscar. Terrified and besieged by abominations hitherto thought of as delusions and old wives tales, the village people are crying out for someone to save them from their unholy corruption and purge the manor of the unimaginable horrors that have plagued Ravenscar since Gerald’s untimely death…
