Korra Memorial Park and Spirit Reserve, Republic City
The last free spirit vines seem like a tiny patch of moss in comparison to the gleaming and blaring lights of the pristine glass and metal towers surrounding it. The spirits are restless here, for though few have seen them in generations, their weary whispers can still be heard by children and lonesome wanderers with nothing left to lose.
But today, the spirits are especially quiet as they witness the telltale signs of a new epoch in the making: a rally of disgruntled and frustrated people from most walks of life: poor, getting by, Bender, Non-Bender, etc. All deeply dissatisfied with the state of affairs. A mysterious figure in a hood with a holographic mask, not too dissimilar to Amon’s hops atop a nearby statue of Avatar Korra.
Its hard for your team to make out the hooded figure’s words, even with the spy drones transmitting the crowd’s every twitch. Something about this figure’s speech modulator interferes with recording equipment it seems. But, judging from the crowd’s loud whoops and hollers and “Preach!”, its clearly quite the rabble rouser.
“All right, ladies and gentlemen,” your superior officer chimes in over the subdermal radio, “Just got confirmation from the commish. We’re to roll in and sardine the lot of them.”
And so your cohorts do, firing gas grenades into the crowd. Theoretically harmless stuff, if painful. But the way the smaller figures in the crowd drop to their knees, choking, eyes slowly turning red… makes you doubt that. Still, you have your orders. You ready your weapon… you aim…
you swear, even through the mask and the safe distance of the scope… the hooded figure is looking right at you. No, through you, as if they just read your very soul. You hand falters… your gun fires. Was that you? Did you take the shot? Or did your nerves spasm and take the plunge for you?
Either way, you’ve kneecapped someone’s mother, someone’s wife… even though you can’t actually hear her from this distance… her screams pierce every thought you have, and you can do nothing but keep following orders.
Or can you?
Note: newcomers to the Avatar franchise are more than welcome. This is far enough in the future that the events of the show are little more than myth and are largely irrelevant
