“Lady Majeira, may you touch our land but gently, and lift your hand as soon as may be.”
Worship of the gods is far from widespread in Czardjina, but in the canal city of Zvijeka the Festival of the Winter Queen grows in popularity with each passing year.
Ostensibly a religious celebration in honour of the goddess of ice, the Czardan have embraced the pageantry of this mid-winter festival and made it their own. Lights, decorations, a “parade” down the Central Canal by a flotilla of ornate and colourful boats… it’s no wonder that travellers flock to Zvijeka at this time of year.
But is something important being lost in the midst of these festivities?
Devout followers of Majeira claim that the celebration devised by the leaders of Zvijeka is an insult to their faith. Those who call themselves True Czardan warn that to honour a goddess at all, even unfittingly, is an affront to the Holy Mother, the sea which gave all men birth. A sin that will be avenged, or so they say.
It’s all just talk, though. Isn’t it?
