Everyone has heard of the heroes.
They are adventurers, born and trained for a journey to retrieve a damsel in distress, wealth, or glory. They are paragons of honor and justice, cleansing the world of evil. They are legends, names lauded by kings and remembered through time.
When a hero rides through any town on their mighty steed, they are greeted with great aplomb. The young stable boy would take the reins of his stallion for a copper piece, and the matronly innkeeper’s wife would serve him a stew. The aging merchant would exchange supplies for gold, and the fearful peasant girl would ask for his help, sending him on his next quest, his next adventure.
And as everyone has heard of the heroes, so too have they heard of the legendary Elemental Blades.
For legend speaks of ten swords of unique type and shape, from the thin rapier to the heavy greatsword. Tales say that only those of insurmountable power can even hope to wield one of the Blades, as they have been chosen by Fate and Destiny themselves to rid the world of those who would seek to destroy it. It is told that each can wield the power of one of the divine elements, be it fire, ice or something entirely different. For as long as any can remember, heroes high and low have searched for the elusive blades, and only one has been found.
That is, until some turned up in the most unexpected of places.
For it wasn’t a majestic knight that lifted the blade for the first time and thus made a claim as its owner. It wasn’t the paladin who held it in triumph as he reveled in the stable boy’s awe, or the innkeeper’s wife’s care, or the merchant’s respect, or the little girl’s desperate plea.
No. In fact, Fate and Destiny played their hand otherwise, and they played it well.
For no one noticed the Blade the stable boy hid behind a pile of hay, nor the one under the counter of the inn, nor the one in the false floor of the merchant’s wagon, nor the one left by the girl beneath a bush. The dark necromancer ready to enslave the world did not notice, and he paid for it with his life.
That story is not this one. This story, the one we shall discuss today, is a different tale. But, it is very much the same.
A Hero’s Tale is a gritty medieval fantasy adventure about unexpected heroes and the untold challenges of everyday life.
